Quarry Lake: What's New for 2012

Welcome to the 2012 water-ski season, our tenth season at Quarry Lake.

Important Notes for the 2012 season:

Please, do not leave garbage at Quarry Lake, even in the garbage cans.  Whatever you bring with you, please take home and dispose of it.  We do not have garbage service at Quarry Lake.  The garbage cans are there really only as a last resort ... I think many times we are using them as a first resort.  Whatever you put in there creates work for someone else to properly dispose of it.  Please -- take any garbage you create at the site back home with you and dispose of it there.

We spotted trespassers at Quarry Lake on a few occasions last year. The trespassers were swimming on the north shore of the lake. Please be sure to confront anyone you don’t recognize. Only SPLWSA Members are allowed on site. If you are uncomfortable confronting possible trespassers personally, then call Shakopee police and obtain the trespasser’s car license number.

• While this is not new, I wanted to remind you that although Quarry Lake is privately owned and not considered a public body of water, all State and Federal laws, rules, regulations regarding boating and waterskiing still apply to Quarry Lake. This means, for example, rules regarding boat and trailer licensing, navigation lights, age of boat operators, waterski mirrors, waterski daylight limits, Coast Guard Approved life jackets, including an additional throwable type-IV, fire extinguishers, safe driving, exotic species, etc. Shakopee Police, Scott County Sheriff, and DNR Conservation Officers and other law enforcement personnel do patrol the site.

There are limited spaces in specified locations in the lake for private boat lifts, and limited spaces in specified locations for shored-based private boat-and-trailer storage. In 2012, there is a $250 fee to keep a boat on a lift in the lake, and a $100 fee for boats to be stored at the site on trailers on the shore. For more information, please see “Quarry Lake Site Rules” tab on this web-site. http://www.splwsa.org/quarrylake/rules.html

• We are asking all SPLWSA members aged 13 and over, including Quarry Lake Members, to commit to at least 5 hours of volunteer labor again this year. Our responsibilities at Quarry Lake are many, and include mowing the lawn, mending the fence, and maintaining the boat launch and the road into the site. In addition, we need to install, remove, and maintain the slalom courses, docks, Ski Jump and perform other general maintenance—not to mention all the improvements we have inmind.

Many of us are very busy and may not be able to fulfill our labor obligation. As a result, for 2012 we are again offering a ‘buy- out’ option for those who do not want to be held accountable for five hours of labor. This ‘buy-out’ is $100 (or $150 family) and is in addition to the Shockwaves Membership fee. We will use these funds to hire out some of the work.

• WE DO NOT WANT EURASIAN MILFOIL OR OTHER EXOTIC SPECIES TO TAKE ROOT IN QUARRY LAKE. Not only is it against Quarry Lake Rules for you to transport Eurasian Water Milfoil into Quarry Lake, it is against Minnesota Law for you to transport all exotic aquatic species from one lake to another. Please be careful to remove milfoil, other weeds, and other exotic species from your boat PRIOR to transporting it to Quarry Lake. Here is a link to the DNR web-site showing suggested procedures prior to transporting your boat from one lake to another. http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/invasives/preventspread.html Please make sure to review and follow these procedures. If you are not familiar with Eurasian Milfoil and other exotic invasive species, or do not know what the various species look like, please review this information on the DNR web-site. http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/invasives/index.html

• Please note that we may be pre-empting your Quarry Lake time-slots up to three times during 2012.

• We want to make sure that we have communicated to all members that an environmental investigation discovered a small amount of Diesel Range Organics contaminants in Quarry Lake. The Minnesota Department of Health informs us that it is highly unlikely that the amounts measured would pose risk to water-skiers. For a full discussion of these findings and a copy of the letter from the Department of Health, please click on our “Environmental” tab on the Quarry Lake web-page. http://www.splwsa.org/quarrylake/report.html

Thank you. We welcome comments, suggestions, or questions about these changes. You are welcome to offer comments and suggestions to our Quarry Lake Coordinator or any of our Board members. Please send your comments to quarrylake1@yahoo.com Thank you for helping us keep and improve this great site!
